The Medicine of Laughter
Solomon said it first in Proverbs 17:22: "A merry heart doeth good like a medicine."
Here are just some of the benefits:
- According to the Mayo Clinic, laughter may ease pain by causing the body to produce its own natural painkillers.
- Research has found that regular sessions of joyous and cheerful laughter substantially reduces inflammation markers and improves several other health indicators, such as stress hormones and cholesterol profile in type-two diabetes.
- Another benefit: laughter can stimulate circulation and aid muscle relaxation, both of which can help reduce some of the physical symptoms of stress. It boosts your immune system by increasing the number of natural killer cells and activated T cells (these are some of the immune systems most important cells). They work hard for you, defending your body against infections and diseases.
- Many Americans take anti-depressant medications; it has been said that drugs and laughter can both increase serotonin levels in our brain.
Laugh more often and count your blessings. Shift your attitude to a positive outlook, thank the Lord that you are still alive each morning, share happy thoughts with others, and be a blessing to someone today!
